Year 2

Josie Rogers

Class Teacher

Background:

Josie has been a year 1 teacher at St Columb Minor Academy since February 2018, after starting at the school as a HLTA in September 2017. She was briefly a supply teacher after graduating before gaining the post at St Columb Minor Academy. Josie trained to be a teacher at the University of St Mark and St John.

Why did Josie choose teaching?

Josie has always wanted to work with children, from a very young age and chose to go down the path of teaching when she started college. Josie volunteered in Laos for a month (just before starting her PGCE) teaching deprived children English and it was the most amazing experience. It really confirmed to her that teaching was the thing she was most passionate about.

Outside of school:

Josie lives very close to the beach and spends most of her spare time there. She enjoys going in the sea, and has even been attempting to surf! Josie loves being around people and spends a lot of her time with her close friends and family.

Most unusal unknown fact about Josie:

Claim to fame! She has a video on ‘You’ve been framed!’ from back in the 1990’s that is still sometimes shown on TV!

Sophie Deveson

Class Teacher

Background:
Sophie has worked at St Columb Minor Academy since 2013. She started as a HLTA, then moved on to teach Year 1, and now, Year 2. Prior to that, she trained at The Bishops School in Newquay, where she stayed for 3 years; teaching in the Nursery and Year 1. In addition, she also taught in Pondhu, St Austell, where she taught Foundation Stage. Sophie only came into teaching after having a family. Prior to that, she managed a Co-Op Food Store, merchandised baby clothes and was an Estate Agent.

Why did Sophie choose teaching?
Sophie decided to train as a teacher after discovering the joy of educating her own children. Even now, she still gets a huge amount of joy from enabling children to learn. The pleasure children show when they have succeeded is a daily thrill for Sophie and it is the reason she does the job! She finds it a huge privilege to engage and mould the inspiring young minds in her class.

Outside of school:
Sophie enjoys walking her dog ‘Teddy’ along the beautiful Cornish beaches and breath-taking coastal paths. She has walked from Wadebridge to St Agnes and is working her way down to Land’s End. She loves to read, anything and everything goes. From autobiographies, to murder mysteries, to historical novels. Her family say, as long as Sophie has a book on the go, all is well in her world!

Most unusual unknown fact about Sophie:
Sophie had a broad Welsh accent, as she grew up in Bridgend, Wales. However, she promptly lost the accent when she moved to the Midlands, where having a Welsh accent was not cool!
